Stages of Adulthood

October1
There are three stages of adulthood:
  • Early adulthood (19-39)
  • Middle adulthood (40-64)
  • Late adulthood (65+)
Early and middle adulthood is often referred to as the ‘working years’. During this time most adults are employed in casual, part-time or full-time work. Towards the middle of early adulthood, people often begin to think about ‘settling down’ and establishing a family.
Late adulthood is traditionally the stage when people retire from the paid workforce and enjoy a more relaxed or leisurely lifestyle.

It is important to note that every individual comes from a different socioeconomic, cultural or religious background. Even within each stage, people will have different needs and lifestyles depending on their stage of life.
